When I grow up
"Loosen up my buttons babe" was the chorus to one of my favorite songs when I was a young teenager.
Doesn't that suck?
Maybe it was the Middle Eastern influence or the dynamic group of girls that sang it, but I have a feeling it was a combination of everything particularly revolving around the "sex appeal" in the song "Buttons" by the Pussy Cat Dolls. Luckily, I don't have to be too embarrassed, it topped Billboard top 100 songs at number 15 in the year 2006. ( I wasn't alone- apparently everyone liked it) The inspiration for the song is even less profound. Sean Garrett apparently is a big time producer and commented,
"Everyone knows Nicole [lead singer of the group] is very sexy so the concept of loosening up her buttons,—every guy would want that and women wouldn't have a problem with guys loosening up their buttons."
Wow. That statement is FALSE, but what an inspiration. (NO ONE is even wearing buttons in the music video. No one. )
As I've gotten older I have subconsciously treasured my mind. I've learned I like positive things and how positive things make me feel. I've realized the little things you put in your head come out of it. When I woke up this morning, I was singing "When I Grow Up" by that PCD group mentioned above. (In the midst of my research I got caught up on Youtube)
Its super catchy,
"When I grow up, I wanna be famous I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies When I grow up, I wanna see the world Drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies"
I want none of those things-actually. While writing this blog I discovered it said "groupies" not "boobies". I was cool with wanting boobies, I'm hoping mine will just magically appear bigger one day.
However, yesterday I woke up singing a song called "Fearless". The chorus goes,
"I wanna be fearless No holding back no backing down Fearless Because I believe you're with me now Bring on the unknown Lead me and I'll go Come set me free God, I want to be Fearless (I want to be)"
I like waking up wanting to be fearless vs. famous.
It is crazy to think that something you don't think that much about can have so much influence over you. That it is the first thing that pops into your head when you wake up in the morning.
They say you are most influenced by the five people you surround yourself with. I couldn't find any research on that, but seeing how songs influence me and my thinking- I could believe the five people I surround myself with have an even stronger impact.
This is not some original thought. I finally understand the proverb:
"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."Proverbs 4.23
Guarding myself is something I'm slowly realizing to do over time. Sometimes, like I said, even subconsciously. I generally choose to listen to this one positive Christian station, Air1, because when I do I wake up singing "Fearless". When I go to watch a tv show, I generally pick something that'll make me happy like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. When I decided on a gym to join, I decided to join one where people knew my name, asked how I am, and noticed my hair cut. (Also teach me how to dance like I'm in a music video and make me grateful that I did not pursue that dream because I am very uncoordinated- I promise I'm right behind this girl, but they decided not to show my terrible moves #sleekphysique)
All this is not to tell you to do what I'm doing, its just to share that life is too short not to keep it positive and worthwhile to live.
Life is too short not to learn peoples names and say "hi" to strangers.
Life is too short to let all the negative energy in this world hold you back from being positive.
Life is too short to surround yourself with people that make you feel like crap, especially if you are most influenced by the five people you are surrounded by.
Below I'm including a "gallery" of things that make me happy. Maybe you'll see a picture of yourself, so take a gander. If you don't see a picture of yourself- this isn't about you, so just get over it. (Srsly. I got lazy, so its not personal) Maybe, take some time today to look at all the things that make you happy.
